Descriptive Writing

05/09/2011

How do you write a descriptive paragraph?  The brain gets pulled in so many different directions: finding words, building sentences, expressing voice, organizing thoughts clearly, and more.  In a recent concentration on descriptive writing, 4th graders practiced using adjectives and active verbs to bring their writing alive.

Some writing projects started with lists of descriptive words or phrases.  Some journal writing started with prompts, such as, “One thing I hope to see, hear, touch, taste and/or smell in my life.”  Some pieces were taken through phases of the writing process:  pre-write, first draft, edit and revise, publish.  Reading responses have included describing a setting or character.  Our Unit of Inquiry lent itself to describing extreme climates.  Please enjoy a piece of descriptive writing here.
